However, the five concertos written over a period of almost 40 years, beginning with No. 1, which was composed at the age of 29, shortly after his attempt to win the Prix de Rome (unfortunately he did not win), are extremely important works that allow us to witness not only the evolution of Saint-Saens's style, but also the evolution of the French piano concerto. The first concerto does not yet display a strong individuality, but it is a rewarding piece, colored with gorgeous technique, as Saint-Saens was a gifted pianist from an early age. Ten years later, the Second Symphony is a masterpiece that, despite being completed in less than three weeks, boasts a wonderful performance full of passion and lyricism.
