This release features two pieces from the final concert of the 1954 Lucerne Festival. For the Belgian-born Klyutans, Franck’s symphony was one of his most thoroughly mastered works. Having recorded it in session with the French National Radio Orchestra in 1953, his performance here firmly grasps the work’s cyclical structure while delivering a dynamic, undulating interpretation marked by dramatic peaks throughout. The second half of the album features Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto, performed by the then 23-year-old Igor Oistrakh. Although he was still a student at the Moscow Conservatory at the time, he had won first prize at the 1952 Wieniawski Competition and recorded this piece with the Philharmonia Orchestra the following year, in 1953. Although the outer movements are performed at a fairly fast tempo, they are rich in expression, as if he were thoroughly enjoying himself. The unity with the orchestra is flawless, and it’s no wonder he was met with thunderous applause and cheers after the performance. Since Klyutants never made an official recording of this piece, this reissue is particularly valuable for that reason alone.\nThis concert was recorded and broadcast by the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen, SRF), but since the original tape has been lost, Ludger Bockenhoff remastered it based on a tape held by the French National Audiovisual Institute (INA). The booklet features eight photographs provided by the Lucerne Festival Archives.
