This year's program will feature the important choral works of Henry Purcell, the greatest genius of the English Baroque. The ensemble has a strong affinity with French Baroque works, but they also have a great affinity with the music of 17th century England, which had an inseparable relationship with French society linguistically and culturally. Two of Purcell's odes for the celebration of St. Cecilia, known as the patron saint of music, are well-known: the rather short \"Come, O Joy\" Z 239 from 1682, which the group has recorded on ALPHA (ALPHA 285); and the current program, the lengthy \"Mezetta! The performance here is the longer version, \"Cecilia glorious Cecilia\" Z 328, written 10 years later. The group specializes in French court music, which greatly influenced the English court music of the time, and this time, too, they will let us enjoy the richly undulating musical development with extremely detailed interpretation. The orchestra is a 12-piece string ensemble with brass and woodwinds as needed, plus bassoon, keyboard, theorbo, and harp, and the ensemble's longtime greats, such as Lucas Perez on gamba and Elisabeth Geiger on organ and harpsichord, also perform well. The ensemble is also well represented. The accompanying recording of Blow's work is a world premiere recording in an early manuscript that differs from the form later included in \"Angel Amphion,\" a collection of pieces dedicated to the Queen of Denmark.
