He excelled at playing the harpsichord from an early age, and his first exposure to the music of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Karl Heinrich Graun, both of whom were well-known at the Eisenach and Gotha Gymnasiums, opened his eyes as a composer. He was particularly fascinated by and greatly influenced by the works of C.P.E. Bach. Bach also highly appreciated Wolff's works, and the two have had a good relationship ever since. After graduating from the University of Jena, he became a court musician in Weimar and was promoted to Kapellmeister in 1772. The four cantatas here are in a neat style that is appropriate as a bridge from the Baroque period to the Classical period, and are proof of the high quality of Protestant church music after J.S. Bach. Michael Alexander Virens and the Cologne Academy, who gave a brilliant interpretation of Wolff's Passion Oratorio (777999), will join the soloists in singing the joy of the Christmas season in high spirits.
