Highly acclaimed in the UK and boasting significant influence, *Songs To Remember* is a work that takes listeners back to Scritti Politti’s roots. Emerging from the DIY indie scene in London’s Camden in the late ’70s, this group led by Green Garthside—who boasted a musical vision comparable to that of Miles Davis, with whom they would later collaborate—established their status as true innovators defining the early ’80s with this album. Their sound, a unique fusion of philosophical musings and a burgeoning pop sensibility, was truly one-of-a-kind. Upon its release in 1982, NME described this album as “witty and original,” and it has since cemented its reputation as a landmark album that defined an era. For this reissue, Alex Wharton oversaw the full remastering of the audio at Abbey Road Studios. Under the supervision of Green Garthside himself, a long-awaited vinyl re-press has also been realized.
Originally released in September 1982 under catalog number ROUGH20, the album peaked at No. 12 on the UK Albums Chart and features such classics as “The Sweetest Girl,” “Faithless,” and “Jacques Derrida.” In addition to being released in digital and CD formats, the album is finally available again on vinyl, with specifications faithful to the original 1982 release. The new release features an embossed sleeve with a bee pictogram adorning the corner of the front cover.

Mark E. Smith, who was an artist at Rough Trade Records at the time, once told me, “Scritti Politti has the best rhythm section in rock music.” He didn’t mention Green Gartside by name, so I don’t know how he felt about him. However, all of us at Rough Trade Records were completely captivated by Green’s honey-sweet vocals and his superb lyric writing. It was a truly vibrant era back then, and we were simply overwhelmed by the sheer number of talents flocking to Rough Trade Records one after another. Among them, Green stood out in particular. He was someone who used his intellect as a weapon to challenge the established norms of pop music head-on. I still vividly remember how proud we were of *Songs To Remember* back in an era when releasing a full-length album to the world was still a relatively new experience for us.
-Jeff Travis (Rough Trade Records)

(1/2)

Tracklisting:

1.Asylums in Jerusalem
2.A Slow Soul
3.Jacques Derrida
4.Lions After Slumber
5.Faithless
6.Sex
7.Rock-A-Boy Blue
8.Gettin' Havin' & Holdin'
9.The Sweetest Girl
