We play traditional blues on stage from time to time, but only a few songs a show, and I feel that our approach to the blues is unique and based on our chemistry as a band. This album has given us a mission. In a sense, it is 'anything goes', but we wanted to stay true to the spirit of the blues in the traditional sense. This is not a blues/rock record, it's a blues record. Sound-wise, we wanted it to be different from a regular Gov't Mule record."

Although technically a studio album, "Heavy Load Blues" was recorded live on analog tape at The Power Station New England studio, using vintage guitars, amps, and other equipment to recreate the authentic sound. Haynes worked with engineer and co-producer John Paterno (Michael Landau, Robbie Williams, Steve Gadd Band) on this 13-track album.

Among them, the Junior Wells standard "Snatch It Back and Hold It" is a soulful and exciting interpretation of the Junior Wells standard, with the band freely covering the classic song, interspersed with a spontaneous jam called "Hold It Back," which is clearly given a funky groove. The album is a soulful and exciting interpretation of the blues. The band's four members, Haynes, Matt Abberts (drums), Danny Lewis (keyboards, guitar, and backing vocals), and Jorgen Karlsson (bass), also often add their own unique arrangements to songs familiar to blues fans. "I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody's Home," recorded by Ann Peebles, is one of the few songs the band has performed live. On this song, Haynes' lilting guitar riff plays over a solid foundation of organ and rhythm, creating a certain funk-like finesse. On Howlin' Wolf's "I Asked Her For Water, She Gave Me Gasoline," Gov't Mule, known for pushing the envelope by fusing rock, R&B, jam, funk, and jazz genres, delivers a heavier, up-tempo funky version that is a departure from the original. up-tempo, funky version of the song is chosen.
Tracklisting:

1.Blues Before Sunrise2.Hole in My Soul3.Wake Up Dead4.Love Is a Mean Old World5.Snatch It Back and Hold It/Hold It Back/Snatch It Back and Hold It6.Ain’t No Love in the Heart of the City7.(Brother Bill) Last Clean Shirt8.Make It Rain9.Heavy Load10.Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home11.If Heartaches Were Nickels12.I Asked for Water (She Gave Me Gasoline)13.Black Horizon
1.Blues Before Sunrise
2.Hole in My Soul
3.Wake Up Dead
4.Love Is a Mean Old World
5.Snatch It Back and Hold It/Hold It Back/Snatch It Back and Hold It
6.Ain’t No Love in the Heart of the City
7.(Brother Bill) Last Clean Shirt
8.Make It Rain
9.Heavy Load
10.Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home
11.If Heartaches Were Nickels
12.I Asked for Water (She Gave Me Gasoline)
13.Black Horizon
