Since 2013, the Berliner Philharmoniker has moved to Baden-Baden, a spa resort in southwestern Germany. The Staatskapelle Dresden, led by Christian Thielemann, was invited to Baden-Baden as the 2015 guest orchestra. They took over the aforementioned Salzburg Easter Festival from the Berlin Philharmonic, so their casting to Baden-Baden comes as a surprise.Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Dresden have been working on a Bruckner symphony cycle, albeit at a slower pace, and have produced a substantial body of music with Bruckner No. 8 (716204) recorded in 2012 and Bruckner No. 5 (717904) in 2013. This 9th is Bruckner's last symphony, an unfinished work written up to the third movement, but it depicts with overwhelming presence the profound world colored with the religious colors of his later years. Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Dresden also featured Bruckner's Ninth during their Japan tour in February 2015, and gave a wonderful performance. In Baden-Baden, Thielemann has crafted the music with meticulous attention to detail, bringing out the orchestra's traditional beauty of beautiful tone and creating a moving sound as if the Staatskapelle Baden-Baden were a majestic cathedral.
