Kvast-Hodapp (Kvast was her husband's surname) was born in Bargen, southwestern Germany (then a territory of the Grand Duchy of Baden in the German Empire). As a child prodigy, Hodapp became a successful pianist in her teens and enjoyed great popularity in the 1910s and 1920s. However, in the 1930s she greatly curtailed her activities and probably left no commercial recordings at all (there were a few piano rolls). She also became a member of the Nazi Party in 1941, which naturally hindered her postwar return. She managed to resume her activities in 1948, but soon fell ill and died the following year. Because of these circumstances, Kvast-Hodapp has been almost entirely a matter of literature until now. The recordings made by MELOCLASSIC during his brief postwar return to the scene show what a great pianist Kvast-Hodapp was. The Bach Mean Clavier, in particular, is so clear and intelligent, with not a hint of timelessness, that it is hard to believe that this is a performance by a pianist born in the 19th century.
