A percussionist in his youth, Donohoe studied piano under Yvonne Loriot and Olivier Messiaen in Paris, and won a prize at the 1981 Leeds International Competition and the highest prize at the 1982 Tchaikovsky International Competition. He started with two Shostakovich albums, \"24 Preludes and Fugues, Op.87\" (SIGCD 396) and \"Piano Concertos No.1 \u0026amp; 2 and Piano Sonatas No.1 \u0026amp; 2\" (SIGCD 493), and his last album (SIGCD 566) combined Mussorgsky with Ravel and Messiaen's works.
