The Fifth and Sixth Symphonies were written against the backdrop of the war in Europe. The Fifth, begun in 1942, is dedicated to \"the heroic and freedom-loving people of the great Soviet Union. The Sixth is an interesting work whose four movement titles are direct quotations from Lincoln's famous Geddesburg Address, known for its \"politics of the people by the people and for the people,\" and it is a dense work that also reflects Harris's passion for nationalism.Written in 1941, Acceleration is a work that deserves to be called \"another war symphony,\" partly because some of its musical ideas were transferred to the Sixth Symphony.
