In his early years, he wrote primarily chamber and church music, and in his later years, when he regained his health, he turned to larger forms, resulting in numerous orchestral works, including three concertos. This album contains his most recent works. The Bassoon Concerto, the centerpiece of the album, is a large work of more than 40 minutes in duration, and it features a large orchestra with a variety of percussion instruments and two harps, requiring a high level of playing technique from the soloist. The meditative second movement, reminiscent of Bartók's \"Night Music,\" is particularly impressive. The \"Dona nobis perchem\" is characterized by an orchestral melody reminiscent of church bells and harmony that combines advanced sounds, and is inscribed with an inner prayer for peace. The small piece for woodwind decuplet, \"Interrupted Chorale,\" is an acoustic experiment formed by a dissonant chorale and a short two-voice invention. It is performed by a group of England's finest players.
