The 10-CD box set is a must have for any fan of 20th century music. Sylvain Cambourin, who served as the permanent conductor of the Yomiuri Symphony Orchestra for a long time, has renewed the sound of the orchestra. This 10-CD set includes recordings from 1992 to 2016, including his tenure as permanent conductor of the SWR Radio Symphony Orchestra of Baden-Baden-Freiburg (Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra) (only Bartók's Viola Concerto is included in the Saarbrücken Symphony Orchestra). The set is composed to provide a bird's-eye view of the repertoire he was best known for, from Berlioz to Messiaen. It is also a pleasure to note that about 60% of the recordings are from first-time recordings. Cambourin was especially fond of 20th century music. He was especially good at expressing the music of the 20th century with elegance and color, which was unique to this era, with its austere and gritty moods. For example, the orchestra brings out the vivid colors and subtle sensuality from the works of Schoenberg and Berg, which tend to be tainted with leaden images. Only Cambrelin could combine Webern's \"Six Pieces for Large Orchestra\" and Debussy's \"Six Ancient Epitaphs\" in such a way that they blend seamlessly with each other. In Bartók's \"The Wonderful Chinese Official\" and Janácek's \"Sinfonietta,\" he brings out the exquisiteness of the works with astonishing clarity, while captivating with rich shadings. Stravinsky's \"The Rite of Spring\" is also a delight with its elegant sound without violence. Ives' problematic Symphony No. 4 delicately layers various elements scattered all over the place to create a single, grand flow. Both performances boast an unprecedented level of perfection. French music by Debussy, Ravel, and others is superb in its sense of design, using the dry and wet tones of each piece to fill the space without excess or deficiency of sound, with a properly arranged balance. Every inch of the music was heard with a supple resonance. The excellent German broadcast orchestra can be counted on to play with even greater clarity. In the Berlioz overtures, the orchestra skillfully alternates between lyricism and movement, leading to dazzling excitement. Cambourin's performance also shows us that Dutilleux's music, with its depth and sharpness, is an extension of Berlioz. And then there is Messiaen's work, which can be said to be his life's work. His works by Messiaen, his life's work, create a brilliant paradise of color to the point of being almost psychedelic. Without listening to these works, one cannot talk about 20th century music. The set was so rich that one might be tempted to say so.
