Brahms loved the natural horn without valves, even though valved horns were already in circulation in the mid-19th century. His horn trios were written for natural horns, and the balance of sound with the piano and gut-stringed violin used at the time was well thought out. A century later, Ligeti's Horn Trio was written as a tribute to his predecessor Brahms. While using the most advanced compositional techniques of the time, Ligeti's Trio in Four Movements preserves the traditions of Western music. Sierra's Trio was written in 2021; he studied under Ligeti at the Hamburg University of Music from 1979 to 1982, and in his own compositions, he attempts to fuse European avant-garde with American folk music, jazz, and salsa, following the style of his teacher. Manuel Escaurriasa, who will perform, is a horn player with the Orchestre National de l'Opera de Paris, and Miguel Colm is the concertmaster of the Orquesta Nacional de España. Pianist Denis Pascal is a veteran professor at the Conservatoire de Paris.
