Included here are two works by Messiaen and Takemitsu in unusual configurations of clarinet, violin, cello and piano. Messiaen wrote his seminal \"Quartet for the End of the World\" in 1940 at the Görlitz concentration camp, a work that would go down in the annals of 20th century chamber music, and premiered it the following year in front of numerous prisoners of war. Inspired by the biblical book of Revelation chapter 10, the work reflects a wealth of imagery, including Hindu rhythms, birdcalls, and other sounds favored by the Messiaen, against a backdrop of religious objects. Takemitsu's \"Katrain II\" was written as a tribute to Messiaen, extracting the four soloist parts from the original \"Katrain,\" as well as utilizing the imagery of the four instruments. Performers include Iturriaga Gagoitia under violinist Zakhar Bron and other soloists active in Europe.
