This live recording has now been revived through a new remastering from the original master. This was the NHK Symphony Orchestra’s first performance of the work. Featuring a stellar cast of singers—including Bernd Weikle in the title role and Lucia Pop—along with the expressive and powerful chorus of the Kunitachi College of Music, the recording vividly brings to life the world of Elijah, the Old Testament prophet. This acclaimed performance—which Savallish himself hailed as “a special performance” after the concert—became a talking point for being released at breakneck speed just one month after the recording. The recording was engineered by Kenichi Handa, a master of his craft who, after working at Nippon Broadcasting, became an engineer at CBS Sony in 1968. Although a live recording, it captures every detail with remarkable clarity, faithfully reproducing the sound of this large ensemble—including ten soloists, the chorus, and the organ—with meticulous balance.
