The first previously unreleased studio recording by Bolette (AU21438) caused a great sensation, and the long-awaited second recording is also astonishing. Jorge Borretto (1914-1990) was an American pianist of Cuban origin. He is a master of 19th century-style piano playing with great skill and rich expression, and has many fans. His Liszt and Chopin, with their distinctive rich tone and plenty of singing, were superb. Bollett has truly pedigreed piano DNA, having studied with Godowsky and then finished with Giloti, a cousin of Rachmaninoff and a favorite pupil of Liszt and Tchaikovsky. However, after a long period of disappointment, he finally attracted international attention in the 1970s, recording mainly for Decca. This album is from that remarkable period, but all of the recordings are world premieres. The quality of the recordings was miraculously good, thanks to the state-of-the-art West German broadcasting stations at the time. The mastering techniques of audite's owner, Beckenhoff, have brought this astonishing world back to life. Most delightful of all are Liszt's Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2.Borretto recorded both pieces with the Rochester Philharmonic conducted by Zinman on Vox in 1979, and there are also EVERST and PYE recordings of No. 1 from 1960, but this recording is the definitive one in terms of both maturity and quality of the orchestra. The virtuosity and exquisite singing are in the direct lineage of Liszt, and you can feel the enthusiasm of the audience and Bolette's groove, which is only possible in a public recording. The three \"Petrarch Sonnets\" were recorded by Decca in the 1980s, but this is nine years earlier, and is full of youthful vigor and charm. Even more impressive is Liszt's arrangement of the Tannhäuser Overture. This performance is full of technique, musical magnitude, and the beauty of the piano tone. This is a rare phenomenon that is sure to excite piano lovers from the bottom of their hearts.
