The world premiere recording of the Zingspiel, \"Nonsense, Malediction, and Vengeance,\" written by Goethe's childhood friend and composer Philippe Christoph Kaiser (1755-1823), was realized 232 years after the composer's death. The first edition of this work was written for a relatively large orchestra, and this is the world premiere recording. The idea for \"Frolicking, Swearing and Revenge\" dates back to 1784, when opera buffa (Zingspiel) was so popular in the 18th century that Goethe and his friend the Kaiser embarked on their own fine production of a German Zingspiel in the Italian opera buffa style. This opera shows that even composers who were out of touch with the latest fashions of the time could write novel and ambitious works if they collaborated with the Weimar poetic genius.Kaiser sets Goethe's text to music with wonderful melodies, vocal virtuosity, and a wide range of original instrumental colors. The recording is a co-production with the West German Broadcasting Corporation, featuring up-and-coming singers who have mastered the vocal techniques of the time, and is a revival of an opera that had been forgotten for nearly 200 years. The dynamic and emotional performance of the complete work of this unknown masterpiece is a world premiere recording of a highly accomplished performance.
