Bennett and Evans first met in 1962 while performing (though they had not yet performed together) at a special jazz event on the White House lawn during the Kennedy administration. It is said that it was jazz and theater singer Annie Ross, who had known the two for many years by the early 1970s, who came up with the idea that Bennett and Evans should make an album together; in June 1975, they finally got together, and it was Tony's idea that they should do an album together. Tony later said: \"You don't bring your cronies, because I don't bring mine!\" (p. 3). Bennett and Evans selected the songs, worked out the arrangements semi-voluntarily, and chose the take they would eventually use. The music is at its most heartfelt and human, in a realm rarely entered, where jazz and pop music merge. The follow-up album, Together Again, was released in 1977.It is one of the best-known works for Bennett, who passed away this year.
