Maestro Piccioni's unmistakably Mediterranean and jazzy touch on samba, bossa nova, and lounge music is accompanied by Afro-Latin-tinged percussion and vibraphone, layered with Hammond organ and gorgeous acoustic guitar, Nora Orlandi's wordy vocals make for a breezy, languid, summery song in the tradition of Italian cinema of the 1960s and 1970s. But there is no compromise in the orchestral, mood-setting, romantic highlights, or eerie, enigmatic synthesizer instrumentals. Lengthy compositions form an almost surreal, hazy flow of sound, soundscapes to the desert island that defines the film's story. An almost dream-like, surreal quality pervades this score, with its long, languid melodic lines and lush orchestral passages -- interspersed with gorgeous acoustic guitar sections and organ cadenzas -- that flow off of this soundtrack. The music manages to encompass jazz, samba and classical material with astonishing effectiveness, haunting and moody throughout. The resulting album, which has been largely unheard and unavailable during the CD era, is almost as substantial a listening experience as the movie was to watch. It was a keeper in 1975 and an instant classic, which it remains more than three decades on.
