The chorales are based on Lutheran melodies, which Bach was particularly drawn to, and were composed not as preludes for congregational singing, but as sacramental accompaniments and concert pieces. Together with the Organ Pieces, the Schübler Chorale, and the third volume of the Clavier, the Leipzig Chorale is the pinnacle of Bach's organ music. In this recording, Masaaki Suzuki plays the Schnittger organ at the Matini Church in Groningen, the Netherlands.Alp Schnittger (1648-1719) was the most famous organ builder in Northern Germany in the 17th century, and Buxtehude, Handel, and Bach all admired and loved Schnittger organs.
