Italian composer Vito Palumbo graduated from the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena and studied at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome with Atzio Corghi. He studied under Luciano Berio as a special scholar. He began his career with experimental postmodern works, which won him high acclaim and numerous awards. His vocal works include chamber works, the opera-monologue \"Sinforosa\" based on Italo Calvino's \"The Tree-Climber Baron\" and the chamber opera \"Comuni-canti\" based on a poem by Emily Dickinson. In recent years, Palumbo has created numerous large orchestral works and concertos for solo instruments and orchestra, which have been performed by the RAI National Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Jävle Symphony Orchestra in Sweden. Palumbo is said to be interested in astronomy and aims to find an abstract \"core sound\" within a single long movement, as if to show that \"we are but a small isolated point compared to the infinite cosmic energy. This album features two of Palumbo's violin works soloed by Francesco D'Orazio, a violinist born in Bari, Italy. The \"Violin Concerto\" is a 31-minute piece in a single movement. The music has a \"bittersweet lyricism\" with \"remnants of the Berg\" (Wiet Palumbo). The music is in the style of a cyclical structure that \"begins with 'nothing' and ends with 'nothing'\". The London Symphony Orchestra is performing with Lee Reynolds conducting. The title of \"Chaconne\" evokes \"lingering memories of the past,\" an idea that Palumbo inherited from his mentor Corghi, along with his precise and accurate compositional technique, to place musical \"historical memory\" at the center of his compositions. The piece is in two movements, \"Woven Lights\" and \"The Glows in the Dark,\" and is performed by a five-string electric violin and electronics. The live electronics are provided by Francesco Abrescia, who studied composition and electronic music at the Niccolò Piccinni Conservatory in Bari. This is his first BIS recording.
