He studied music theory at the Manhattan School of Music and began performing regularly with Jackie McLean. His first jazz recording was McLean's 1965 album. Willis mixed soulful hard bop with an intellectual modernism rooted in Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, and Herbie Hancock, and worked extensively in jazz fusion, Afro-Cuban jazz, bebop, and avant-garde. He played with jazz musicians such as Hugh Masekela, Stan Getz, Cannonball Adderley, and Woody Shaw, and played keyboards in the rock band Blood, Sweat, and Tears.\n\n　Just in Time was recorded in 1989. Bob Cranshaw on bass and Kenny Washington on drums.
