The album was written and recorded in full collaboration with her band, consisting of Jorge Balbi (drums, machines), Devra Hoff (bass, vocals), and Teeny Lieberson (synth, piano, guitar, vocals). The theme is timeless and classic Sharon, but the sound is new, fully realized, and sharp as glass.This new approach began when Van Etten invited the band into the creative process while rehearsing in the desert for an upcoming tour. 'For the first time in my life, I asked the band if I could jam. This was a word that had never come out of my mouth before. But everything we did sounded great. I was very curious, 'What's going to happen? I was so curious. We wrote two songs in an hour, and they became 'I Can't Imagine' and 'Southern Life,'\" Van Etten said. The album was recorded at The Church, Eurythmics' former studio, where the mix of electronics and analog textures perfectly matched the band's mystical sound.
