He performs his father John Mayer's Violin Concerto No. 2 in this album of concertos by father and son Indian composers John \u0026amp; Jonathan Mayer (Meyer). John Mayer was born in Calcutta in 1930. After studying in India with Mehri Mehta (Zubin's father), he went on to study in London, where he was a violinist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. His 1978 Violin Concerto No. 2, commissioned by Eric Gruenberg, is a work that demonstrates the capabilities of this instrument. The orchestra also includes a sitar, giving the piece a fresh, distinctive Indian flavor. John's son Jonathan, born in 1975, is a sitar virtuoso. The pranam is inspired by Indian Kathak dance, and the Indian drum tabla also plays an active role.Of interest is that all the pieces are conducted by Indian-born conductor Debashish Chowdhury, born in 1975, studied in Prague, and remains a notable Czech-based conductor.
