Christophe Rousset and Les Talents Lilique continue their exploration of Lully. This time, Lully's third opera, \"Tesée,\" will appear on this disc. This recording by Rousset is a most welcome addition to the extremely scarce recordings of this work. Theseus (Theseus) is a character from Greek mythology, known for his slaying of the Minotaur (a bull-headed man), and this opera takes place in his younger days. The plot centers on Egle (Agraea) and Mede (Medea), who have feelings for the Tézé, with the appearance of a sorcerer, the palace (Versailles), Athens, and other rapidly changing settings, until Egle and the Tézé are finally united. Many composers after Lully, including Handel's Teseo (1713), have used this story as the subject of their operas. Upon the premiere, Lully and the librettist Quinault hastily changed the prologue to a more upbeat tone in response to the news that the French army had won the battle, and included a text that portrays Louis XIV as the god of war. The instrumentation was also large, taking full advantage of the power of Lully, who was very powerful at the time (\"24 violins of the king\" and \"21 small violins\" (la petite bande) participated). The Othoire brothers (flute and oboe) also participated, and the trumpet player was the king's bodyguard. The work was a great success, and from its premiere on January 15, 1675, until April of the following year, it was performed three times a week, although there was a pause in performances. It was also performed at the celebration of Louis XVI's birth in 1754, and remained a representative opera of the French nation. The astonishing vocal eloquence of Lully's music is overwhelming. The instrumental music is also gorgeous and extravagant, as in the \"March of the sacrificial priests\" in Act 1, Scene 10, where the trumpets and timpani play an active role.It is a magnificent work that also reminds us of the overwhelming power of both Louis XIV and Lully at the time. At the center of the drama is Medet (=Carine D'Aix), who gives a brilliant performance as the strong-willed and tragic Medet. She gives a brilliant performance as the strong-willed and tragic Mede, bringing out the full appeal of this most frenetic of Lully's operas and making it a joy to listen to. The duet between Matthias Vidal and Deborah Cachet is also a heartrending experience. Rousset leads the best singers and instrumentalists in a magnificent performance of Lully's magnificent music.
