It took Shostakovich eight months from conception to completion, which is unusual for him, and although the premiere was finally decided and the final rehearsals were held, he withdrew the premiere for various reasons (it is said that the biggest reason was that Lady Macbeth and \"The Bright Stream\" were criticized in Pravda). After that, it was put in storage until 1961, a problematic work. Although he himself described it as a failure, there were statements in his later years to the contrary, and it is certain that it was, in fact, Shostakovich's favorite. The entire work is in three movements, but the first movement alone is over 27 minutes long, and there is a faint sound of cuckoo calls, clearly influenced by Mahler and Bruckner. The grand and austere scherzo and the final movement with its collage of various melodies are all worth listening to, but it is impossible to get the full picture of this work if you get caught up in the details. The performance by Petrenko, who has been attracting more and more attention recently, is so robust that it seems to \"defy all criticism.
