Elements of two female Italian Baroque composers, Barbara Strozzi and Francesca Caccini, along with American composer\/guitarist Bryce Dessner, were combined in an immersive, multidisciplinary performance that premiered at the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2021. ) in 2021 as an immersive performance integrating multiple disciplines. The music itself was then developed as the centerpiece of the work and this album was born. The songs are sung mainly in the mystical language Lingua Ignota (meaning \"unknown language\"), which Hildegard is said to have invented herself, and texts she left in Latin, and are supported by various elements such as meditative ambient music supported by sustained sounds (drones), improvisation using live electronics, and post-minimalism.
