The libretto, written by Eck himself and influenced by Stravinsky's \"Oedipus the Great,\" is largely recited, with the chorus playing an important role. The play's first performance in Munich in 1942 was highly acclaimed, and the Freiburg Theater added it to its repertoire that same year. This 1963 production, conducted by Eck himself, features Ernst Gutstein in the title role and Fritz Wunderlich as his son Ferdinand.
