Frescobaldi, the master of Italian keyboard music, was greatly influenced by the Neapolitan keyboard art that flourished at the end of the Renaissance, and the collection recorded here is one of the oldest of these, a collection of pieces by Antonio Valente compiled in 1576. The works, written while the great Renaissance composers such as Palestrina, Lassus, and Victoria were still alive, are a product of the period when the Kingdom of Naples was under Spanish rule, and they show the essence of the art of variation, which was influenced by Spanish music of the Renaissance period. The harpsichordist Paola Erdas of Sardinia, Italy, who has released notable recordings on the ARCANA and other labels, uses an original 16th century harpsichord and a virginal (rectangular spinet), both of which are extremely rare in existence. The performance is breathtaking in its interpretation, which is breathtaking in its emphasis on each note, but also in its ability to convey the beauty of the form of each variation. The contrast between the two instruments is also very pleasing.
