He studied at the Prague Conservatory and then at the Leipzig Conservatory. He received composition instruction from Reger, but like many Jewish composers of the same period, he was persecuted by the Nazis and was forced to flee to the United States. Although he was eventually able to obtain U.S. citizenship, his works were not well understood, and he spent his final years in disappointment. Perhaps the most popular of his works is the 1927 opera \"Švanda the Bagpipe Blower,\" which was a huge success upon its premiere. The opera was a great success upon its premiere and was regarded as a representative work of the Czech National Music School, and was frequently performed in the Czech Republic. The \"Songs and Dances of Bohemia,\" composed in 1929, is a unique piece with a folkloric flavor. The melancholy violin solo in the first piece has an atmosphere reminiscent of the famous \"Zigoinelwaizen.
