Sprague

Description:

Emily Sprague is the frontwoman of Florist, a lo-fi folk/pop band from Brooklyn that has released work on Double Double Whammy, a label that has also produced Mitski, Frankie Cosmos, Hatchie, and others. She recorded and self-released two ambient albums, "Water Memory" and "Mount Vision," between 2017 and 2018, on the cutting-edge New York label RVNG, who took note of her talents. The two ambient works, "Water Memory" and "Mount Vision," which she recorded and self-released while working between band activities, have been remastered and made physical with additional bonus tracks by RVNG, a cutting-edge NY label that focuses on her talent. Emily's sound relates to all connections, giving a lively central form to the mystical forces that guide human contact with earthly activity. Through sound and poetry, Emily focuses on fleeting moments of crystal clarity and meditates on a life expanded for complex meaning-making. This vision is undoubtedly beautiful, tender, and profound. The two works have a mirror-like structure of opposites, as evidenced by the title Sea and Mountain, and function as two chapters that are complemented by the written poems.Water Memory is Emily's first long-form instrumental ambient music, created between Massachusetts and New York City on Eurorack modular synthesizers (Monome, Mannequins, Mutable Instruments, ALM Bust Circuits, 4ms, Xaoc, Verbos Electronics), Teenage Engineering OP1, and Valhalla VST Reverb, and was the result of a year-long exploration of self and sound. It unfolds like a collection of ancient aphorisms. Sometimes playful, even fantastical, but always glittering and real. Like the title, the meaning is aqueous - never too solid, but only real. In contrast, Mount Vision was recorded in a much shorter period of time in northern California. The synthesizer-driven, deeply arranged extended tone compositions seem to drift off into the sky. New age-tinged synth drones, sensitized piano, and minimal ambient are composed over the course of the three compositions. Emily's mission on this planet would be to facilitate or brighten the connection between man's deepest knowledge and his intellectual nature. And "Water Memory" and "Mount Vision" are most certainly monumental works along this shared path. For this release, the remastering was done by Taylor Deupree. The Japanese edition also includes an additional bonus track, a Japanese version of the title track, which is a poem Emily wrote for each piece, read in Japanese by Kiki Kudo, a Japanese artist and writer living in New York whose work has been released on Anthony Naples' Incienso label.
