Capella de la Torre is a German Renaissance instrumental wind ensemble specializing in medieval and Renaissance music, founded in 2005 by Munich-born shawm player Katharina Boiml, and named after the 16th century Spanish composer Francisco de la Torre and \"de la Torre\" (from the tower), a reference to the medieval minstrel's music from the tower. The name is a play on the 16th century Spanish composer Francisco de la Torre and the Spanish \"de la Torre\" (from the top of the tower), which refers to the legend of the medieval bard who played music from the tower. With a formation almost identical to that of the actual musicians active in Nuremberg at the time, the orchestra has earned a reputation as a group dedicated to the practice of historical performance, and has received the Opus Classics and Echo Classics awards. Recently, the group has been researching and performing new editions of works by unknown composers and masses with additional and augmented wind instruments, and has also released a new concept album of Renaissance music. This new album of Italian Christmas music contrasts the different musical styles and sound worlds of the Renaissance.Included in this world premiere recording is the fantastic \"Mass for the Virgin Mary\" written by Dutch composer Heinrich Isaac (c1450-1517). The work is accompanied by other polyphonic music that he may have known or been influenced by during his extended stay at the Italian court, including the \"Angelica Virta\" by Francesco Landini, a composer and player of a variety of instruments. Other religious works for Christmas, such as the hymn \"Hor non nascescias\" and \"The Dance of the Shepherds of God,\" also recorded for the first time in the world, are included. Colorful and vibrant Italian folk and traditional music is also performed, including \"You Come Down from the Sky,\" which is still sung today. And with this deliberate contrast of secular and sacred, instrumental and vocal, Capella de la Torre, conducted by Katharina Boiml, seems to recreate in sound the joyous Christmas scenes of Italy around 1500 AD.
