This video shows \"Anna Karenina,\" which premiered in 2017 and had to cancel its Japan tour due to the Corona disaster. It was directed and choreographed by John Neumeier based on the novel of the same name by Lev Tolstoy, the great writer of Imperial Russia, and was also performed in a gala format during a tour of Japan in 2023. The original story is set in Russia in the 1870s, where Anna, the wife of the government official Kalenin and a socialite, falls in love with Vronsky, a young aristocratic officer, and is doomed to ruin. In Neumeier's version, the story is set in the present day, and three family stories are told at crossroads: politician Kalenin and his wife Anna; Anna's intense love for popular lacrosse player Vronsky, who appears before the couple's cold relationship; her brother-in-law Dolly, who is troubled by her husband's infidelity; and Kitty, who is rejected by Vronsky, but happily married to farm owner Lyovin. The stories of these three families are told in an intersecting manner. Hats off to the dancers for their ability to express the subtleties of complex human emotions and differences with only their bodies. The opera \"Evgeny Onegin\" is used, especially in the final scene where Anna goes to see the opera, which shows the contrasting lives of Tatiana and Anna. The music uses Tchaikovsky, film music by Alfred Schnittke, and folk songs by Cat Stevens\/Yusuf Islam to add depth to the story.
