Bach’s \"St. John Passion\" is one of his masterpieces. Its premiere took place on April 7, 1724, on the first Good Friday after J.S. Bach assumed the position of Kantor (Thomaskantor\/Music Director) at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. The performance was given by the St. Thomas Church Choir—a boys’ choir with a history spanning nearly 800 years (also known as the St. Thomas Church Boys’ Choir or the St. Thomas Church Choir of Leipzig). And in 2024, exactly 300 years after the premiere, the St. Thomas Church Choir—the “original performers”—and Andreas Laitz, who became the 18th cantor since J.S. Bach in September 2021, are releasing a recording of the “1724 First Draft”! In keeping with historical tradition, the performance was staged with the musicians arranged around the organ of St. Thomas Church. Please enjoy the sound of the premiere, revived after 300 years.\n\nAndreas Reitze was born in Solothurn, Switzerland, in 1975. He studied church music, keyboard instruments, and choral and orchestral conducting in Bern, Zurich, Lucerne, Basel, and Graz. Since then, he has been invited to conduct at numerous theaters and concert halls. He has also expanded his scope of activities and garnered attention by leading the period instrument ensemble he founded, the “Cantus Filmus Consort,” to make the world premiere recording of Monteverdi’s monumental work *The Coronation of Poppea* (Naples version) on the Rondeau label (ROP6237384). Well-versed in liturgy and the church calendar, and recognized for his extensive experience directing boys’ choirs, he is a cantor of a new era who has attracted attention as the first Swiss Catholic Thomaskantor since the Reformation (previously, the position had been held by German Protestants). In July 2023, he released his first recording as a cantor, “J.S.
