Description:

Composer Petros Petridis was born near Cappadocia, Turkey. He graduated from high school in Istanbul and studied law in Paris from 1911, but served in the Balkan War the following year. After returning to Greece in 1913, he became a naturalized citizen of Greece, and after that he worked as a music critic while traveling back and forth between Paris and Athens. His works, such as "Requiem for Emperor Constantine Paleologos," are highly acclaimed for their use of medieval Byzantine chant and complex polyphony. The oratorio "St. Paul" on this disc is a similar work, dramatically recounting an episode in the biblical Book of Acts concerning St. Paul with 14 chorales sung by recitatives, soloists, and chorus. The album also includes "Symphony No. 1" premiered by Dimitri Mitropoulos in 1933 and "Kleftiko Dances," Petritis' first large-scale orchestral work. Naxos Japan
