It was completed on March 13 of the following year and dedicated to his mother and sister. Forty-five years later, the work was revised by the composer himself and given a new work number, Op. 145. In September 1943, Weinberg settled in Moscow, where he became friends with Myaskovsky and Shostakovich, and joined the Federation of Composers in order to have opportunities to perform and publish his new works. The following year, in February 1944, he began composing String Quartet No. 3. String quartets were very popular in Moscow at the time, and Weinberg's new work was no exception. In 1946, the Bolshoi Theater Quartet premiered Weinberg's String Quartet No. 4, which was published in 1959. What one hears from this work are mainly echoes of war, with the first two movements representing an enemy invasion and heroism, and the third movement a funeral march. This was the trend in music at the time. The finale recalls Mendelssohn's Octet, but whether this is intentional or accidental is not known. Hear it performed by the Silesian Quartet, formed by graduates of the Szymanowski Conservatory in Poland.
