Theseus exiles Hippolytus and pleads with his father, Neptune, to impose a severe punishment on him, but…\n\n“Lyric tragedy,” a genre of French opera established by Lully—who served as music director at the court of Louis XIV, the Sun King—in collaboration with librettist Philippe Quinault. Rameau, who had already made a name for himself as a composer of instrumental works and a theorist of harmony, completed *Hippolyte et Alice* at the age of 50 as his operatic debut; it followed the “lyrical tragedy” form established by his predecessor, Lully. However, even though this opera is now regarded as one of Rameau’s masterpieces, its innovative compositional techniques sparked a whirlwind of controversy at the time of its premiere.\nThe production directed by Jeanne Candel, which was staged at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in November 2020, features central characters such as Thésée, Hippolyte, *Phèdre*, and *Alicie* are clad in aristocratic costumes, while the gods and the crowd perform songs and dances in modern, at times kitschy, attire, creating a striking effect.
