Live recordings of \"Die Walküre\" with Karajan\/Met, \"Tristan\", \"Elektra\" and \"Salome\" with Böhm, and \"The Shadowless Woman\" with Sawallisch, all from her heyday, are now available for the first time from the archives of the broadcasting station and opera house. Authorized by the Nilsson Foundation. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Birgit Nilsson (1918-2005), the greatest dramatic soprano of the 20th century born in Sweden, the Nilsson Foundation has released live recordings of her operas from 1953 to 1976 at the Vienna State Opera, New York Metropolitan Opera, and Bayreuth Festival, which were the centers of her activities. This anniversary box contains 31 CDs of live recordings of Nilsson's opera performances in Europe and the United States, including the Vienna State Opera, New York Metropolitan Opera, and the Bayreuth Festival. In addition to 12 complete recordings of nine operas, including Wagner, Strauss, and Puccini, for which Nilsson is best known and which set new standards in 20th century singing, the box also includes two CDs of excerpts and concert recordings. The orchestra was led by such conductors as Karajan, Böhm, Stokowski, Sawallisch, and Jochum, as well as such star singers as Rizanec, Varnai, Corelli, Vindogassen, Vinay, and Adam. It is said that Nilsson's powerful voice could carry through even the largest orchestras and reverberate through the audience. Nilsson has made many excellent session recordings during his long career, including the famous \"Ring\" by Scholtei, but one German opera critic said, \"Nilsson in the recording studio is like driving a Porsche in the backyard. On the other hand, Nilsson was a singer whose extraordinary voice could not be fully captured in the recording studio. In this sense, the live recordings of Nilsson's actual opera performances are valuable documents that convey the true appeal of her overwhelming voice and expressive power in front of a theater audience. ■The 31 recordings are arranged almost in chronological order of recording, allowing us to trace the evolution of Nilsson's voice. The \"Tristan\" is recorded at Bayreuth in 1957, Vienna in 1967, and Orange in 1973, while the \"Elektra\" is recorded at Vienna in 1967 and Met in 1971, allowing the audience to hear the maturity of the voice and the changes made by the performers. The Birgit Nilsson Foundation has provided full cooperation for the release, and all the recordings have been newly remastered in 2017 from the original analog masters in the archives of the broadcasting stations and opera houses. ■ Each disc is enclosed in a paper jacket, along with a separate 184-page, CD-sized commentary book (synopsis only, no bilingual lyrics) with commentary (in English, German, and French) by Nilsson Foundation president Rubert Reisch and music journalist Thomas Forkert, and many previously unpublished photos, The CD will be packaged in a clamshell box.
