A close friend of Debussy, his works are richly imaginative and vividly colorful, and in track 5, \"Sonorité,\" for example, the sound itself is thoroughly explored. In the \"Small Suite,\" which seems to have been originally influenced by Fauré's \"Dolly,\" we can hear gentle music, but the power that pervades the entire piece forms a different world from that of Fauré. Joel Hastings, who plays on this recording, recorded the 44th Liszt cycle for NAXOS (8.573557) the day before this recording, and unfortunately passed away suddenly four months later. The performance is gentle, as if he were telling a story.
