In 1848, Liszt became the permanent director of the court orchestra in Weimar. The \"Faust Symphony,\" premiered on the same day that the monument to Goethe and Schiller was erected, is a masterpiece in which the three characters in Goethe's \"Faust\" are described in each movement, sounding out their fantastic, epic, and psychological worlds. Originally composed to be performed with orchestra alone, a \"mystical chorus\" was later added. The Staatskapelle Weimar, led by Karabits, beautifully expresses the psychology of the three characters. The coupling is an orchestral version of Mephisto Waltz No. 3.
