Britten (1913-1976)

Description:

Colin Davis memorial performance of Britten's psychological opera masterpiece "The Turn of the Screw," conducted by the next generation of British opera greats, Ferns! The performance was originally scheduled to be conducted by Colin Davis, former principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, who passed away on April 14, just before the performance, after several months of ill health. This performance was, without a doubt, a memorial service for him. The recording of this performance is a reminder of the unification of the performers' thoughts and feelings. The substitute conductor was Richard Fearns, a mid-career British conductor born in 1964. Although he is not well known in Japan, he has been the music director of Opera North in Leeds, North England, since 2004, and his reputation is growing with the success of a series of ambitious productions. He is expected to become an internationally popular conductor in the near future. That sense of brilliant theater is fully conveyed in this performance. They had previously performed "The Turn of the Screw" in 2010. The cast is in the right place. The governess, Sally Matthews, is a British soprano familiar to the LSO series. Her clear and beautiful voice is perfect for this role. Peter Quint's Andrew Kennedy is a young tenor born in England in 1977. He has a beautiful voice that is popular as a tenor in baroque music and Mozart, but he is not lacking in mysterious atmosphere and vocal tension. The important role of Mrs. Grose is played by veteran British mezzo-soprano Kathryn Wynne-Rogers. The boy Miles is sung by Michael Clayton-Joly with the voice of an angel. Whether you listen to this recording in memory of Davis, to get an earful of the next generation of opera leaders, or to catch a glimpse of a new generation of singers, this is a recording to watch.
