Director Barry Kosky selected several episodes from this mythical world and fused them with the music of Antonio Vivaldi to create a new stage production for the modern era.\nSet in a fantastical hotel room, Orpheus narrates the stories of the mythological characters. Under Kosky’s direction and with Gianluca Capuano conducting, the production brings together leading Baroque singers such as Cecilia Bartoli, Philip Jarsky, and Lea Desandre.\nCecilia Bartoli, who plays Eurydice and Arachne, is one of the world’s foremost mezzo-sopranos, renowned for her exceptional technique and overwhelming expressiveness. Meanwhile, Philip Jarsky, who plays Pygmalion and Narcissus, is a world-renowned countertenor highly acclaimed for his crystal-clear voice and delicate expression. In this production, both artists leave a strong impression as central figures in the work.\nA pastiche is a form that flourished in the 18th century, in which existing musical works are combined to create a new stage production. For this work, Kosky and Olaf A. Schmidt meticulously examined approximately 500 pieces by Vivaldi, carefully selecting and rearranging arias, duets, and instrumental pieces.
