London-based Caribbean-Belgian composer, protégé and musician Nala Sinefro releases her long-awaited debut album \"Space 1.8\" on CD on the prestigious Warp label. The album was released digitally\/streaming in September 2021, and in very limited quantities on analog vinyl, and has been praised by all major music media, including Pitchfork as \"Best New Music\" and quickly became hard to find. The album was written, produced, performed, engineered, recorded, and mixed by the 22-year-old Sinefro himself, who plays a modular synthesizer as well as a pedal harp.On this album, her collaborators include saxophonist Nubaiya Garcia, James Morrison, another saxophonist and member of the Ezra Collective, guitarist Shirley Tete and drummer Jake Long from Maisha, of which Nubaiya Garcia is also a member, Sons of Kemet drummer Eddie Hick and other leaders of the contemporary UK jazz scene. The \"spaces\" infused into each song, as the song titles suggest, were recorded in a room filled with warm light. During the making of the album, she conjured up resilient colors to bring out the different frequencies of each color. It is a world of synesthesia (as in feeling a certain color with a certain sound) that provides a space for the listener to escape and immerse themselves in. Each song was recorded after the first take, after eating something, chatting, or meditating. Space 1\" is about the various places she calls home, at ground zero, glowing yellow and orange. It's a sound reminiscent of the forests of Soigne, Belgium, where she used to play as a child.Eventually the tune is replaced by a more humid soundscape. It represents the lush mountain ridge in Saint-Joseph on the island of Martinique, where her family lived. In a chrysalis-like space of change, \"Space 2\" is enveloped in a yellow-dark-blue haze, and the supreme joy of free-fall spreads through soft keyboards, shimmering guitars, and a saxophone that sings smoothly between the lower and higher registers, led by a synthesizer that rumbles in the second half of the song.
