Keyboard instruments were considered ideal for budding composers, the harpsichord being able to express the full range of musical textures, while the organ was considered a miniature orchestra because of the many parts it could play and the variety of timbres it could produce. Handel was undoubtedly a virtuoso on both instruments, and his musical education in Halle included studying the works of the German masters of the previous generation. It was also in the field of keyboard music that he first attempted to compose, a rather natural choice for a young composer.Handel's advanced skills in keyboard instrumental playing enabled him to know perfectly how to compose effectively for harpsichord; moreover, these works were \"pictures\" of his best improvisations and therefore excellent witnesses of his talent.
