Despite losing his hearing in an accident while on a hunting trip as a young man, he is known for his numerous works, especially chamber music, including four symphonies. He had a particularly strong affinity for string music, and wrote more than 30 string quartets and string quintets. This album contains two string quintets. No. 28, written around 1847, is a substantial work with a hint of Mendelssohn's influence, and the beauty of the second movement, the Adagio, is a must-hear. No. 29 is a brilliant work with sudden modulations reminiscent of Schubert. The melancholy Larghetto is completely Romantic music.
