Rossini has written a wonderful song for this tale of battle and love in the Roman Empire, based on actual historical facts. Unfortunately, due in part to the poor performance of the singers, the premiere was not a success, and a discouraged Rossini decided to adapt the music that people had praised into other works. The most obvious example of this diversion is the overture. Rossini used the overture as is in \"The Barber of Seville\" with few changes, and also used it in \"Elisabetta, Queen of England\" with a few modifications. Some other adaptations can be found in the arias and duets.Since its revival in 1980, the work has been performed more frequently, and the 29th Rossini Festival featured excellent singers in a superb performance.
