Chakmoul's own liner notes, grounded in deep philosophical reflection, his experience as a pianist, and above all, his profound love for Schubert's works, are a highlight of each release.\n\nThe sixth recording, which marks the midpoint of the series, juxtaposes Schubert's Sonata No. 17 with works by Schumann, exploring how \"naturalism\" in German Romanticism is expressed in music. Schubert's Piano Sonata No. 17 in D major, D 850, was composed in 1825 in Bad Gastein at the foot of the Alps. It was once affectionately known as the \"Gasteiner\" (Gasteiner). It has a large scale, similar to the octet and Grand Duo written the previous year, and exudes energy.Chakmull's interpretation of the first movement is grand and often intense, evoking the majestic peaks of the Alps. From the radiant lyricism of the second movement, through the bright and bouncing scherzo, to the graceful and light-footed finale, Chakmull accurately portrays the rhythmic ingenuity Schubert crafted into the character of the piece.\n\nHis chosen Schumann work for the coupling is \"Forest Scenes.\" This continues the world distilled from the German Romantic view of nature. The final work, \"Three Fantasy Pieces,\" was chosen because its second piece resembles the second movement of Schubert's sonata. This is not an attempt to interpret Schubert in a Schumann-like manner, or vice versa. Rather, it is the result of carefully considering each work and performing them appropriately. The album is one that impresses when heard individually and satisfies when heard consecutively.\n\nJean Chakmoul boasts the distinguished achievements of winning the 2017 Scottish International Piano Competition and taking first prize at the 2018 Hamamatsu International Piano Competition, consistently using Kawai Musical Instruments Manufacturing Co., Ltd.'s full concert grand piano SK-EX during these competitions. This album showcases a profound beauty in the sound, even with its intense percussive impact, and it feels like a powerful force in embodying Chakmul's interpretation. Released as a SACD hybrid disc, surround playback offers an even richer sense of presence.
