Symphony No. 6 was first performed in 1822. It was later performed again at the Niederrhein Festival in 1826 after extensive revisions. Compared to the previous five symphonies, No. 6 is characterized by its clear and large-scale style, with a magnificent first movement, a second movement written in a baroque minuet reminiscent of Handel, a full third movement, and a festive finale in a Turkish style reminiscent of Beethoven's \"Ninth\". The Seventh was Ries' last symphony, composed in 1835 at the request of the Society of Music Lovers in Vienna, but never published during his lifetime; it was recorded for the first time in 2002 by the Zurich Chamber Orchestra under Howard Griffiths, but there is little evidence that it has been performed anywhere else. Ries tried many new things here, the harmonies are much rougher and bolder than in his earlier works, and the instrumentation is more varied. He died suddenly about two and a half years after completing this work and never wrote a ninth symphony. Nissonen brings the work's latent energy and vivid colors to the fore in an extremely dynamic and thrilling performance.
