With a profound sound influenced by Wagner and French modern music, and familiar musical ideas that spring out one after another, Ena's works aimed at an international and universal style, and were better received in the United States and Australia than in Denmark, partly because of their less ethnic color. The two pieces on this album both feature the beautiful melodies that are characteristic of Ena's work. Ener was a violinist himself, and the Violin Concerto, which combines advanced technique and emotional expression, is often regarded as one of his best-known works. It is in three rapid, slow, and fast movements, with the second movement, Andante, beginning with tragic chords, leaving a strong impression. The Allegro scherzando last movement may remind some people of Sibelius' works. The Second Symphony is a traditional four-movement work that sounds at times like Bruckner and at others like Wagner.
