The songs included in this collection are \"The House of Life\" (first performed in 1940), a collection of songs on verses by Rossetti that represents Vaughan Williams' early years, and \"Four Last Songs,\" a collection of songs from his later years, written between 1954 and 1958. McConkie's songs are also largely unpublished, having been composed between his studies with Vaughan Williams in the mid-1920s and his devotion to the British modernist aesthetic in the 1960s and 1970s. In this work, tenor singer James Geer and pianist Ronald Woodley again perform in a breathtaking performance that is the product of a long-standing and continuing partnership.
